Kids Smart Cabo

As one of John Pentz’s personal endeavors, he has committed to obtain ALL the funding (more than 2 million dollars!) for the San Jose del Cabo Optimist Club library project. The concept was born when Fernando Garcia, president of San Jose del Cabo, Aragon saw poor kids in an office supply store paying for copies of chapters of a book that was required in their public school classes. Toke at his heart so much that poor kids don’t even have access to a required book that they have to scrape together a few pesos to make copies so they can study, he decided somehow, some way, need to create a library for underprivileged students. He proposed his idea to his club members and said, “We need to build a library, one that is accessible to the kids in the low income neighborhoods”. (There is only one library in San Jose and it is downtown San Jose, very far from the poor neighborhoods, and is very small).

Optimist member Architect Samuel Godoy Soto of San Jose del Cabo researched the public library system and all the components necessary to create a library he has donated his time and talent to create a magnificent library project that will be the finest in the state, and beyond.

Kids Smart Cabo and the Pentz family met after Melinda Pentz contacted Cathie Smith several years ago because of an article in the Gringo Gazette about our Optimist Club KidSmart scholarship program. She brought school supplies and Christmas gifts for the KidSmart kids and a wonderful relationship was established with the Optimists. Then they were asked to help them with their insurance, and continued communication about projects and the Optimist clubs of Los Cabos.

Wed. June 20, 2008, Mr. Pentz, Fernando Garcia Aragon, and International liaison to the state government Marco Ehrenberg, met with Los Cabos mayor Luis Armando Diaz to present the library project. Mr. Pentz had already committed to purchasing the property that the club had chosen, on a corner in the new area of Vista Hermosa in San Jose del Cabo, and also the lot next to it, where he and his wife Melinda have personally committed to entirely fund a youth center on their own. (Purchases totaling $100,000 US dollars). The Mayor surprised John and Fernando by offering 2 larger lots from the municipality, in the same area, next to a sports field. Once the library construction is finished, it will be delivered it to the government as a public library, and will be maintained as a public library by the government. The federal government will supply books, and the Optimist Club will seek donations of books to supplement the basic inventory. The library plans call for a computer center, and The Optimist Club is working to find a financial sponsor for that area, asking first the Gates Foundation, which has funded other computer centers in Mexico, and then other foundations.

The Pentz family is funding the youth center so that local kids will have a place to go, enjoy activities, attend classes, and receive counseling based on family values.

Yo Reciclo

Things we do everyday can harm or help our environment. With over 6 billion people on earth, we all need to think about every thing we can do to make a difference. We can all help our planet, one item at a time. The YO RECICLO organization and The Shoppes at Palmilla are working together to help create a better Los Cabos!

The Shoppes at Palmilla has created a Collection Center so you can bring us your used materials to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, air and water pollution and generate less garbage.

Recycling materials will be different each month. A special container has been placed at the center for all the recycling materials. Also, in our kiosk, you can find brochures and more details and useful tips to do at home to help us in save energy helping our environment.

We also believe the kids must be also involved. To help this, we invited them to participate in a special activity during our past ARTS DAY OUT event where they painted and decorated our container for receiving recycling materials. On the same event, kids has the opportunity to made recycled paper too.

At The Shoppes at Palmilla, we are 100% supportive of the charitable organizations and people in need in our area. We continually support worthy causes, promote good for the continued improving and human quality of life.

Recently, The Shoppes at Palmilla and it’s tenants, hosted master pianist, composer and poet Romayne Wheeler performing again in Los Cabos for a gala concert benefit for the Mexico’s Tarahumara natives who live in Copper Canyon in extreme poverty.

Romayne is well known in Los Cabos for his altruist activities on behalf of the Tarahumara, amongst whom he has been living for the last 16 years. Every year the artist goes around the world to hold concerts for the benefit of the Mission Clinic, headed by Jesuit Padre Verplancken. Together, they have significantly improved living conditions for the Raramuris (as the natives are known), so poor yet so rich in spirit!
